The Passing of Dr. William R. Jarvis of Amherstburg

CPS members will be sad to learn that Dr. William R. Jarvis of Amherstburg, ON died on March 6, 2018 in his 90th year. Bill was a vegetable pathologist at AAFC Harrow Research Centre from 1974 to 1994 and a longtime member of CPS. He was a winner of the Bailey Award from CPS in 1985 for his literary contributions to plant pathology in Canada. He wrote many submissions for “Diseases and Pests of Vegetable Crops in Canada” published by CPS in 1994. His book “Managing Diseases of Greenhouse Crops”, published by APS Press in 1992, is a standard reference for plant pathologists, students, growers and extension specialists alike. Bill was highly respected locally, nationally and internationally for his knowledge of diseases of field and greenhouse vegetables and for his expertise on Botrytis gray mould and its management. The climax of his career was the registration of Sporodex, a Canadian first for the biological control of powdery mildew in greenhouse crops.
