I started my career in plant pathology as a summer student in 1972 at the Pacific Forest Research Centre while attending U of Victoria as an undergraduate. I completed my MS and PhD in Plant Pathology at Montana State University (1979) and North Dakota State University (1982), respectively. In 1982, I joined Agriculture Canada’s Lethbridge Research Station where I worked as a Research Plant Pathologist until my retirement in 2015. My studies involved several disease pathosystems including snow mould in winter cereals and grasses, common bunt and stripe rust of wheat, covered smut of barley and seed pathology problems in sorghum. My research interests involved plant physiology, molecular biology, host and parasite genetics, and morphology of host-parasite interactions. I have served as Section Editor (soilborne diseases) of the Canadian Journal of Plant Pathology as well as provided manuscript reviews for numerous national and  international journals. I have authored and co-authored over 80 scientific manuscripts, 15 book chapters, and two books. I have also served as Junior and Senior Director, Secretary and President of the Canadian Phytopathological Society. My outside interests include the guitar, travel, running, cycling, and hiking.
